The Rainbow Passage

What is the rainbow passage? How does it relate to our industry. During the face fit testing process the mask wearer completes a series of exercises. These exercises test the seal of the mask and whether the mask fits the wearer. The fit test protocol should include a minimum of 7 exercises. The rainbow passage features in exercise 5.

Talking Exercise

As part of the face fit test procedure. You will be asked to talk. Some opt to count backwards from 100. Others use the rainbow passage. It is a short and phonetically balanced passage. It reflects the variety of sounds and mouth movements used in standard, unscripted English speech. Quite often used by language therapists. It contains nearly all the sounds of the English language. It contains nearly every letter of the alphabet. Below is the rainbow passage. Can you see which letters of the alphabet are missing?

Health and Safety Executive Guidance

In INDG 479 it explains all 7 exercises. Above is a photographic guide to the 7 exercises during a qualitative and a quantitative face fit test (using and ambient particle counting device). Below is exercise 5 in more detail.

The wearer should talk slowly and loudly enough to be heard clearly by the fit tester. The wearer should read from a standard reading passage or count down from 100.
